This work presents the idea of a latent state and the possibilities for change and progress in a world of multiple variables, only if the necessary conditions are in place. As these extraordinary and sometimes unnoticed seeds, bearers of life, remind us.
The textile is a metaphorical representation of the cycle of seeds. With an impressive diversity of forms, colours, sizes and ways of dispersal, seeds remain in waiting and can spend years in dormancy. Grouped or scattered in a repetitive pattern, within an outer covering or individually, only if the necessary conditions are in place will they be able to germinate, sprout and grow.
Techniques used and dimensions
This is a handwoven piece made on a low-warp loom, in a plain weave on 4 shafts, intervened with a high-warp wrapping technique over a needle that recalls pile or looped weaving. In certain areas of the composition it becomes three-dimensional, emulating the seeds that inspired it. Woven in mercerised cotton and viscose cord, it creates different nuances that can be appreciated at first glance in the textures and sheen of the yarns used, and as one moves around the piece.
Once removed from the loom, it is mounted on an olive wood frame-support by the artisan El Arte del Olivo. It can be placed on furniture or on the wall, with box-like sides that invite touch and help it maintain its shape.
Dimensions: 38 × 20 x 4.5 cm (width × height x depth).
