The necessary conditions

This work explores the idea of latency and the possibility of change and progress within a world shaped by many variables, but only when the necessary conditions are present. It is a reminder embodied by these extraordinary, and sometimes overlooked, seeds: bearers of life.

The textile is a metaphorical representation of the seed cycle. Remarkably diverse in form, colour, size and methods of dispersal, seeds remain in waiting and may lie dormant for years. Grouped together or scattered in repeated patterns, enclosed within a covering or standing alone, they can germinate, sprout and grow only when the necessary conditions are met.

Techniques and dimensions

This handwoven piece was made on a low-warp loom in a four-shaft plain weave, combined with a high-warp needle-wrapping technique reminiscent of pile or looped weaving. In certain areas, the composition becomes three-dimensional, evoking the seeds that inspired it. Woven in mercerised cotton and viscose cord, the piece reveals subtle variations in texture and sheen, visible both at first glance and as the viewer moves around it.

Once removed from the loom, it was mounted in an olive-wood support frame made by the craftsman El Arte del Olivo. It can be displayed on furniture or on a wall, and its box-like sides invite touch while helping the textile retain its form.
