Intensive handweaving courses on artisan looms

In these artisan loom courses you will learn to weave by hand, guided by an accredited Master Craftswoman and professional textile artisan since 2007.

The training is individual and in person, so that you can receive immediate attention. The approach is intensive and practical, adapted to your pace, your level and your needs, so that you can continue weaving independently from the knowledge you acquire.

You can choose between a rigid heddle loom, a table loom and a floor loom. In all of them, we work with our own methodology, developed through daily experience in our artisan textile workshop.

Course syllabus

The course syllabus is intensive and complete, and we will work through every stage of handweaving:

Designing pieces and choosing fibres.
The calculations needed before you begin.
Setting up the fibre on the loom.
Study of weave structures.
The weaving itself.
The final finishes.
Solving problems that may arise.

No previous experience is required. If you are starting from scratch, we will begin with the foundations. If you already have some experience, you will be able to consolidate your knowledge, organise ideas and discover new weaving practices directly in an active professional workshop.

Whether you come to the loom as a personal interest or with a more professional intention, in these individual courses you will have time to ask me directly, experiment and resolve doubts as they arise. The aim is for you to be able to continue working and create your own handwoven textiles on your low-warp loom.

Accredited Master Craftswoman

I have been a professional textile artisan since 2007. I design, create and handweave everyday pieces, textiles and artistic works on artisan low-warp looms.

Over the years, I have studied weave structures in depth, explored the behaviour of natural fibres and developed an understanding of the possibilities offered by non-mechanised looms. This has led me to create my own methodology for both work and teaching, which you can see reflected in our pieces and textiles.

In 2024, after studying my professional career, the Regional Government of Andalusia granted me the recognition of Master Craftswoman, making me the first woman in the province of Jaén to receive this distinction.

From this background, I teach intensive training courses based on real workshop experience, with practical, personalised training and a clear, careful and proven methodology.

Which low-warp loom to choose

You can choose between three types of looms: rigid heddle, table and floor looms. All three are low-warp looms, although each one offers a different way of working, learning and progressing.

The rigid heddle loom is the simplest and most manageable. With folding options available, it allows you to begin without prior training and create simple textiles by combining colour and texture. It requires the lowest investment.

The table loom allows you to explore weave structures and the interpretation of drafts in greater depth. It is suitable for those who want to expand their possibilities and work on looms from 4 to 16 shafts. It requires training and a medium investment.

The floor loom offers similar possibilities to the table loom, although with greater warp capacity and a more advanced way of weaving, as the shafts are moved with the pedals. It requires training and a higher investment.

Telar de peine

Es el más sencillo y manejable. Con opciones plegables, permite comenzar sin formación previa y crear tejidos sencillos combinando color y textura. Es el que requiere menor inversión.

Telar de palancas

Este telar permite profundizar en estructuras de tejido e interpretación de gráficos. Es adecuado para quienes quieren ampliar posibilidades, y trabajar en telares de 4 a 16 lizos. Requiere formación y una inversión media.

Telar de pedales

El telar de pedales ofrece posibilidades similares al telar de palancas, con mayor capacidad de fibra base y una forma de tejer más avanzada al mover los lizos con los pedales. Igualmente requiere formación y una inversión más alta.

Textile training for centres and institutions

In addition to the in-person courses at the workshop, I also offer the possibility of travelling to provide intensive training in educational centres, museums, cultural institutions and companies.

This format is designed for training programmes or projects that wish to incorporate the artisan loom as a tool for creation, research and learning, with content adapted to their specific context.

Methodology and working philosophy

These courses are individual and taught with exclusive dedication, so that you can resolve any doubt immediately and receive direct attention throughout the course.

They are theoretical and practical courses in which you will learn to weave on the loom you have chosen, from designing your pieces to finishing them, going through each and every stage of the weaving process.

The working proposal includes setting up two warps, a sample piece and a scarf, so that you can understand, practise and reinforce all the course content.

In these intensive courses we cover the following contents:

Specific weaving vocabulary.
The stages of handweaving on a loom: from the idea and design to the finished piece.
Design and project planning: initial and final measurements, calculation of the number of threads, fabric density, total length, amount of warp and weft fibre.
Interpretation of technical weaving drafts for artisan table and floor looms.
Development of the work sheet for each project.
Warping and setting up the warp on the loom: warping, chaining the warp, pre-sleying, winding on the warp, threading the heddles on table and floor looms, threading the reed, tying on, checks and tying up the treadles on the floor loom.
Preparing shuttles.
Weaving: tension control and problem solving.
Measuring and rolling the fabric.
Handling joins and broken threads.
Different types of finishes.

Metodología

En estos cursos intensivos abordamos los siguiente contenidos:

Vocabulario específico de tejeduría.
Fases del tejido a mano en telar: desde la idea y el diseño hasta la pieza terminada.
Diseño y proyecto de la pieza: medidas iniciales y finales, cálculo de número de hilos, densidad del tejido, largo total, cantidad de fibra de urdimbre y de trama.
Interpretación de gráficos técnicos de tejido artesano en telares de palancas y pedales.
Desarrollo de la ficha de trabajo de cada proyecto.
Urdido y montaje de la urdimbre en el telar: urdido, trenza, pre-peine, enrollado de la urdimbre, enhebrado de mallas (en telar de palancas y pedales), enhebrado de peine, atado, comprobaciones, atado de pedales (en el telar de pedales).
Preparación de lanzaderas.
Tejido: control de tensiones, solución de problemas.
Medición y enrollado del tejido.
Tratamiento de empalmes y rotura de hilos.
Distintos tipos de acabados.

Do I need previous experience?

No. Each course starts from scratch, so you do not need previous experience.

What will I learn?

In each course you will learn:

In the theoretical part, how to distinguish between the different types of looms, the specific vocabulary and the complete process of handweaving on looms. You will also cover basic notions of design, fibres and uses.
In the practical part, how to carry out all the calculations needed to set up the threads on the loom, weave, prepare the shuttles and complete the finishes, just as we do in our workshop.

What do the courses include?

The course includes:

Use of the loom and all the necessary tools.

The natural fibres we will weave with.
A PDF vocabulary document specific to each course.
A PDF document with the stages of artisan weaving for each course.

What do I need to bring?

You only need to bring comfortable clothing suitable for weaving at the loom, a pencil and a notebook for taking notes.

You do not need to bring your own loom, although if you would like to bring it, that is also possible.

Where is your workshop?

El curso se imparte en nuestro taller en la Casa Forestal El Pilarillo, a 7 km de Orcera, en plena Sierra de Segura, en el Parque Natural de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas.

La carretera de acceso es de montaña, está asfaltada y en buen estado, y disponemos de zona de aparcamiento.

Es un entorno donde se respira calma, aire puro y una gran diversidad de flora y fauna.

Yes. Each course has a different duration, from two to four or five days.

After the course

When the course ends, you take with you all the knowledge you have learned, your sample piece and your scarf. You can also count on me to develop your first projects or resolve specific doubts by phone or WhatsApp.
