The Time of Mist

Necessary pauses in order to continue

Mist, beauty and strength

The Time of Mist refers to those necessary mental pauses within the chaotic flow of everyday thoughts. They may be imposed, yet they are also essential in order to arrive at a solution that would not otherwise emerge.

In this work, I explore the idea of enforced awareness: how an external presence, the mist, through its beauty, invites or compels us to stop. In doing so, it creates the space for an awareness that may lead either to a solution or to the acceptance of unwanted problems or situations after experiences that leave their mark throughout life, shaping each person differently.

The unspun wool fleece becomes a visual metaphor for dense mist, allowing the path ahead to remain only partially visible: the path towards a destination, the resolution of a problem or the acceptance of a new personal situation. At the same time, it reveals the beauty of the mist itself, a beauty that can only be appreciated when there is no hurry, nowhere to reach, and all that remains is to stop and contemplate.

Techniques and dimensions

This highly textured textile was handwoven on a low-warp loom using an adapted variation of the eight-shaft honeycomb technique, on a linen and cotton base. The warp threads are arranged with open spaces that reveal the thick fibres of the wool fleece.

Two different shuttles were used, a boat shuttle and a rug shuttle, for the two wefts: cotton and linen, and natural merino wool fleece, forming voluminous loops at the edges of the textile. Once removed from the loom, the piece was mounted on a wooden stretcher frame, hand-covered with cotton fabric.

Dimensions: 105 × 70 × 4 cm (width × height × depth).
