Mist, beauty and strength

The work The Time of Mist refers to those necessary mental pauses within the chaotic flow of everyday thoughts. They are forced pauses, yet at the same time necessary, in order to reach a solution that does not arrive on its own.

In this work, I present the idea of forced awareness: how an external agent, mist, with its beauty, invites or compels us to stop, so that this awareness may arise and lead to the solution or acceptance of unwanted problems or situations, after living through experiences that leave a mark throughout life, distinguishing and conditioning each person.

Unspun wool fleece becomes a visual metaphor for dense mist, allowing us to glimpse the path to follow in order to reach a destination, the solution to a problem or the acceptance of a new personal situation, while also revealing the beauty of the mist itself: a beauty that can only be appreciated when there is no hurry, when there is nowhere to arrive, and all that remains is to stop and contemplate.

Techniques used and dimensions

This is an extra-textured textile, handwoven on a low-warp loom, using an adapted variation of the “honeycomb” technique on 8 shafts, on a linen and cotton base. The warp threads are distributed leaving empty spaces so that the thick fibres of the wool fleece remain visible.

It is woven with two different shuttles, a boat shuttle and a rug shuttle, for the two wefts used: cotton/linen and natural merino wool fleece, forming voluminous loops at the edges of the textile. Once removed from the loom, it is mounted on a wooden stretcher hand-covered with cotton fabric.
