In-person rigid heddle loom course

Personal and intensive training to learn how to weave by hand

What the course consists of

This is an in-person, individual and intensive course taught by Ana, an accredited Master Craftswoman and professional weaver specialising in low-warp looms.

It is designed both for people who want to start from scratch and for those who already have some experience and wish to advance in handweaving. It can be approached as a hobby, as part of an artistic process or with a professional development focus.

If you are starting from the beginning, we will work through every stage, from design to finishing, including calculations, setting up the loom and weaving.

If you already know how to weave, you will be able to refine techniques, resolve specific doubts and apply new knowledge, resources and advice to keep developing your textile creations.

Dates and times are flexible. The course takes place in our artisan textile workshop in the Sierra de Segura, in Orcera, Jaén.

What you will learn in the course

In this course you will learn how to weave by hand on a rigid heddle loom, from the design of the piece to the final finishes. We will cover the necessary theory, although the learning will be mainly practical and directly on the loom. Throughout the course I will be with you at all times, adapting the pace to your learning process.

Course contents and development

During the course we will work through all the stages of creating handwoven textiles on a rigid heddle loom, from the design of the piece to the final finishes. We will combine the necessary theoretical explanation with plenty of practice on the loom.

We will cover

  • Basic loom vocabulary.
  • The stages of handweaving on a rigid heddle loom.
  • Design, project planning and work sheet.
  • Warping and setting up the warp on the loom.
  • Preparing the shuttles.
  • Weaving on a rigid heddle loom.
  • Joins, possible thread breakages and small adjustments.
  • Different types of finishes.

Development

We will set up two warps. The first will be for the sample piece, so that you can understand each stage from the beginning. The second will be a cotton and linen scarf, designed to reinforce what you have learned and allow you to take home a finished piece, pending only washing and ironing.

Objective

By the end of the course, you will have a complete understanding of the process and a solid foundation so that you can design, calculate, prepare and set up the warp on your loom, weave and carry out different types of finishing on your pieces with autonomy.

Casa Forestal El Pilarillo was built around 1901 and has been fully restored and adapted by us as our home and artisan textile workshop. It is located just a few metres from stage 1 of the GR 247, “Los Bosques del Sur”, within the Natural Park.

Surrounded by nature, with a mountain climate and silence all around, the workshop invites you to slow down. The views, the landscape and the calm accompany the learning process and become part of the experience, like a creative pause in time, devoted to learning, observing, creating and weaving.
