In-person floor loom course

Personal, intensive training to learn handweaving

What the course includes

This course is an in-person, individual and intensive training programme taught by Ana, accredited Master Artisan and professional weaver specialised in low-warp looms.

It is designed both for people who want to start from scratch and for those who already have experience and wish to move forward in handweaving. Whether as a personal interest, as part of an artistic process or with a professional development approach.

If you are starting from the beginning, we will work through every stage, from design to finishing, including calculations, dressing the loom and weaving.

If you already know how to weave, you will be able to refine techniques, resolve specific questions and apply new knowledge, resources and advice to continue developing your textile work.

Dates and times are flexible. The course takes place in our artisan textile workshop in the Sierra de Segura, in Orcera, Jaén.

What you will learn in the course

In this course you will learn how to weave by hand on a floor loom, from designing the piece to the final finishes. We will cover the necessary theory, although the learning will be mainly practical and directly on the loom. Throughout the course I will be with you at all times, adapting the pace to your learning process.

Course content and structure

During the course we will work through every stage of creating handwoven textiles on a floor loom, from designing the piece to the final finishes. We will combine the necessary theoretical explanation with extensive practice on the loom.

We will cover

  • Basic loom vocabulary.
  • The stages of handweaving on a floor loom.
  • Design, project planning and the work sheet for the piece.
  • Warping and dressing the loom.
  • Preparing the shuttles.
  • Weaving on a floor loom.
  • Joins, possible thread breakages and small adjustments.
  • Different types of finishes.

Structure

We will prepare two warps. The first will be used for the sample book, so that you can understand each stage from the beginning. The second will be a cotton and linen scarf, designed to reinforce what you have learned and allow you to take home a finished piece, pending only washing and pressing.

Objective

By the end of the course, you will have a complete understanding of the process and a solid foundation to design, calculate, prepare and dress the warp on your loom, weave and carry out different types of finishing on your pieces independently.

Setting

The course takes place in the Sierra de Segura, near Orcera, Jaén, in our workshop at Casa Forestal El Pilarillo. It is a unique and peaceful natural setting, with access by paved mountain road and parking space.

Casa Forestal El Pilarillo was built around 1901 and was later rehabilitated and adapted by us as both a home and an artisan textile workshop. It is located just a few metres from stage 1 of the GR 247, “Los Bosques del Sur”, within the Natural Park.

Surrounded by nature, with a mountain climate and a deep sense of quiet, the workshop invites you to slow down. The views, the landscape and the calm accompany the learning process and form part of the experience, like a creative pause in time devoted to learning, observing, creating and weaving.
