Design

This handwoven wool and cotton rug has been woven in an elaborate twill variation to create a highly textured, striking and colourful textile. We have added a jute backing to the reverse of the fabric to give it more body, quality and durability, helping to reduce wear with use. This backing is machine-sewn where the fringes would be and hand-sewn along both sides, giving the piece greater quality and a more refined finish.

Colour

It has the same colour in both directions.
  • Warp: beige and ochre cotton. (The base on which we weave).
  • Weft: wool in different green shades. (The fibre we cross over the base).

Weave and warmth

  • Composition: 30% cotton, 70% merino wool in the upper fabric. 100% jute in the lower backing fabric.
  • Feel: soft and substantial.
  • Texture: it has a thick texture.
  • Breathability: high; both fibres and the jute backing are breathable.
  • Warmth: high.

Fibres

  • Cotton.

Cotton is one of the earliest fibres used to make textiles because of its exceptional qualities: it is soft, flexible, durable, absorbent, breathable and completely versatile, either fresh or warm. It is one of the few fibres that, depending on the thickness of the yarn, can be used both in summer, when fine and cool, and in winter, when thicker and warmer.

  • Wool.

Wool is a fibre obtained from sheep fleece. There are different types of wool depending on the breed of sheep; one of the finest qualities comes from merino sheep. It is a very soft, flexible, breathable and warm wool that retains heat extremely well. This is national merino wool from native Extremaduran sheep, where the animals are treated with respect; otherwise the sheep would suffer and their fleece would lose quality and softness.

  • Jute.

Jute is a plant fibre obtained mainly from the white jute plant. It has insulating and antistatic properties and retains little moisture. It provides acoustic insulation and does not irritate the skin. It is widely used as a resistant and durable textile.

Finishes

  • Stitching: in this case, it has machine overlocking to prevent fraying, hidden by the hem.
  • Thread finishing: the weft threads are manually inserted into the selvedges with a needle to avoid joining knots in the fabric.
  • Fringes: it has no fringes.
  • Backing: jute sewn by machine and by hand to add quality and durability.
  • Washing: hand washed with natural soap to verify the quality of the fibre and the final measurements. In the first wash the fibres settle and the fabric reaches its final size. After subsequent hand washes, it does not shrink further.
  • Ironing: hand steamed to enhance its finishes, drape and texture.

  • Washing: hand wash with mild detergent and cold water.
  • Drying: wrap a towel around the clothesline, secure it with two pegs, and hang the piece vertically to avoid marks and make ironing easier if needed.
  • Ironing: no special care is required; in general, use the temperature recommended by your iron for the type of fiber. If the piece contains more than one fiber, always choose the lowest temperature.
  • Storage: keep your piece in its box or bag, so it is always ready to use.
