Description
Design
Alpaca poncho handwoven on a loom. This poncho has been woven using plain-weave high- and low-warp techniques and the röllakan technique, with two types of shuttles, literally drawing the hills according to the pattern designed by García Madrid. The neckline and the two separate pieces that form the front are shaped within the loom, so the fabric does not need to be cut once it is off the loom. We looked for and recommended the most suitable technique to carry out this singular piece and decided to weave it to shape inside the loom, drawing the hills of the olive groves of his homeland. This poncho is a unique piece, light and very warm. It has a soft feel, with a 100% alpaca fabric that gives it drape and flexibility, making it very adaptable and pleasant to wear. As an outer garment it works beautifully with many pieces; it is versatile, unique and striking. We have finished it with a hand-sewn hem and a decorative hand stitch in the colour chosen by designer Manuel García to further enhance the finishes.
Colour
We chose a natural tone as the base for the rust and grey hills.
- Warp: natural white. (The base on which we weave).
- Weft: natural white, rust and natural grey. (The fibre we pass across the base).
Weave and warmth
- Composition: 100% natural alpaca.
- Feel: very soft and pleasant to wear.
- Texture: it has a medium, enveloping texture.
- Breathability: high, alpaca is a fully breathable fibre.
- Warmth: high, suitable for cold areas or people who feel the cold easily.

Alpaca
Alpaca originates in the Andes, Peru. It is an exquisite fibre with a series of characteristics that give it exceptional quality: it is very soft, very warm, thermo-regulating, does not retain odours, and its structure, with very few scales, means it hardly felts. Alpaca pieces provide a great deal of warmth while remaining light, and are very pleasant to wear.
Finishes
- Stitching: decorative and reinforcing stitch around all edges with double alpaca yarn.
- Thread ends: weft ends are manually worked into the selvedges with a needle to avoid knots in the fabric.
- Fringes: no fringes; the lower edges have been machine overlocked and hand sewn.
- Making: neckline finished with a hand-finished hem, side and central hems hand sewn.
- Washing: hand washed with natural soap to verify the quality of the fibre and the final measurements. During the first wash, the fibres settle and the fabric reaches its final dimensions. After subsequent hand washes, it does not shrink further.
- Ironing: hand steamed to enhance the finish, drape and texture.
- Brushing: brushed by hand to give it an even softer and more pleasant feel.
